This book will come as a surprise to anyone who has only seem the fine film John Sayles made of this book. Much of the mystery and legendary structure is not in this book. The stories told by the Grandfather and by the unforgettable Cousin Tadhg are not part of this story and there are no silkies as such to be found. Rosalie Frye's book is much more biologically accurate, with the seals being adult Gray seals, rather than immature harbor seals as in the film. The book is also set in Scotland, rather than Ireland, which robs it of much of its political and cultural overtones as well. It is still a fine book, but is much more grounded and less mystical than the film. I don't really disapprove of this, because the book reveals a lot more about the connections between fishing cultures and their nonhuman colleagues, such as seals and birds in a realistic framework. Still this book is much more like R. M. Lockley's Seal Woman than it is like David Thompsons' magical The People of the Sea.

The Secret of Roan Inish/Movie TieIn Rosalie K Fry 9780786810635 Books Reviews

excellent!
The book is really well done. It added to my appreciation. Read all Ms. Fry's other works too. She's good.
Was wanting to read this book for a long time I am very glad it finally became available. I enjoyed the book.
The movie is actually better, and I never say that ever!
The movie made me want to read the book. The book made me glad of the purchase, for it was hard to find!
i was so happy to find this book. i have looked and looked for the story that went with the movie. this is a lovely story about loss, growth, love, hope and belief in the impossible. plus it has selkies which... are just the coolest mythical creature. i didn't think the story would be better then the movie (which i love) but it is!
In a discussion on a Linked In group, we were talking about good and bad film adaptations of written works. I knew that the Secret of Roan Inish was based upon a written work, The Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, but had never seen it. I found it as an expensive used book here on and ordered it, largely because my wife and I enjoyed the film a lot.

What we found was that the film is a better adaptation of the book than the book. The book is rushed at the end, as if Ms Fry is attempting to meet a maximum word count for the publisher. The film is evenly paced throughout and has a satisfying ending.

The education of young Fionna on her family's past is handled largely by Rory (a cousin in the book) but better told with intensity by one of the "dark ones" in the film. I had hoped to find the "dark one" in the book, and was disappointed by the rather weak and uninspiring "info dump" provided by Rory in the book.

That said, the book has a lot going for it. The narrative does a better job of connecting the seals with Fionna than the film.

The locale (Roan Inish is Irish and Ron Mor is Scottish) did not adversely impact either story in my opinion. I felt comfortable reading the story and its Scottish setting vs. the Irish setting of Roan Inish.

I'm not how sure Ms Fry was in Scotland as several minor nits didn't quite fit, but overall, both the book (hard to find and expensive in the used market) and the film are very enjoyable family entertainment.
